1967's Monterey International Pop Music Festival hosted the first U.S. performance of The Who, Jimi Hendrix and Ravi Shankar. Performances by Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Grateful Dead, The Butterfield Blues Band, Booker T and the MGs, and many others cemented Monterey Pop's place in rock n roll history. 

Two famous events happened at Monterey as musicians competed to one-up each other. Jimi set fire to his guitar "as a sacrifice" and The Who's Pete Townshend famously smashed his guitar.
