Born in Ferriday, Louisiana, Jerry Lee Lewis rose to prominence in the 1950s with his wild piano interpretations & being one of a small parthenon of rock n roll pioneers to cross paths with Sun Records at the perfect time -- ushering in an explosion of popular music.
Sam Phillips, sensing the talent that was welling up from the Memphis and upper Mississippi region, founded the Memphis-based Sun Records and began finding and signing artists to contracts, including Ike Turner, Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Elvis and Jerry Lee.
Just by chance one cold Memphis night, December 4th, 1956, Perkins, Cash, Presley and Lewis happened to all cross paths in the Union Ave. Sun Studio. Each in their own rite was on the verge of unprecedented super-stardom. With Jerry at the piano, the four friends held an impromptu jam session. Phillips pressed record & captured the magical event... which sat in the label's archives for over a decade before it was found & released.
Goodness gracious, Jerry Lee Lewis set the world on fire when Sun Records released his soon-to-be smash hit "Great Balls of Fire" in 1957. He shook the nerves and rattled the brains of the country all the way to #2 on the Billboard and #3 on the R&B Chart.
Lewis won four Grammys, was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2012, Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022, and had a 1989 movie about his life, featuring Dennis Quaid as The Killer.
