Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1942, coincidentally just blocks from what would years later become the iconic soul music label Stax Records. Raised singing in the church by her prominent minister father Rev. C.L. Franklin, it was clear from a young age that Aretha was a musical prodigy.

After she signed with Atlantic Records in 1966, the whole world soon fell in love with Aretha's uncompromising, proud & strong American attitude, as she sang out hit after smash hit songs like "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)," "Respect," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Chain of Fools," "Think," and "I Say a Little Prayer".

She had an infectious cameo in the 1980 hit movie "The Blues Brothers", and in 1987, was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Franklin won 18 Grammy Awards, including the first eight "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" awards. Franklin had 112 charted singles on Billboard, including 77 Hot 100 entries, 17 top-ten pop singles, 100 R&B entries, and 20 number-one R&B singles. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and performed at three Presidential inaugurations over four decades: Jimmy Carter in 1977, Bill Clinton in 1993, and Barack Obama in 2009.
