Blues guitarist Chester Arthur Burnett was born in White Station, Mississippi. He gained the nickname Howling Wolf for his strong, imposing presence and infectiously rough vocals. A multi-instrumentalist, Burnett would play guitar, harmonica & sing for audiences.

He was discovered by Sun Records' Sam Phillips in Memphis, Tennessee, where he cut some of his earliest sides. Phillips, who also found Johnny Cash & Elvis Presley, called Wolf his "greatest discovery".

Wolf made his way to Chicago's Chess Records, where along with Muddy Waters and other Chess contemporaries, he effectively founded the genre known as "Chicago Blues".

Known for 300 Lbs of Heavenly Joy and Smokestack Lightning, Howlin' Wolf became one of the most influential proto-rock n rollers in history.

Wolf's incredibly unique musical style deeply intrigued some of the biggest bands of the 20th century. When The Rolling Stones were the hottest band in the world, they refused to debut on U.S. TV unless Howlin' Wolf opened for them. Led Zeppelin covered Wolf's "Killing Floor" as their hit "The Lemon Song" on Led Zeppelin II.
