"Soul Brother Number 1" James Brown was born in rural South Carolina, singing and performing routinely, even as a young child. In 1954, he joined Bobby Byrd's group The Famous Flames as the lead singer, catapulting to fame after releasing soul classics "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me".

With a knack for continuously re-inventing himself and his music, Brown captured the imagination (and the hip movements) of the country for a career that spanned five decades.

When his label thought nobody would listen to live songs that had already been released, James Brown paid his own money to pioneer the "live album" concept, cutting Live at the Apollo, which became arguably his most influential album ever. In an industry rife with predators, James Brown forged his own path, booking and promoting his own shows and maintaining tight control of his unbelievably talented band.

Brown had a stunning 17 singles hit #1 on the Billboard R&B Chart. Ht was one of the first inducteeds into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 1992, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1997.
