From Bowie's 1973 album Hunky Dory, the hit single "Life on Mars?" was tongue-in-cheek parody of Frank Sinatra's "My Way".

David Bowie's timeless avant-garde anthem "Life on Mars" captures a sort of disillusionment with society, and a quest for personal identity. The album Hunky Dory was a follow up to 1970's The Man Who Sold The World, Bowie's first real success. It was a smoother approach than the hard rock of World, which scared his label into poorly promoting the release. It wasn't until Bowie's next album, the smash hit Ziggy Stardust, that Hunky Dory gained the attention and recognition that it deserved.
