Mississippi Blues Styles

Blues Style - Delta Blues
Unique to Mississippi

Delta Blues comes from an area of Northwestern Mississippi known as “the delta” because of it's fertile ground. It was in this area that the Blues was born. W.C. Handy first documented what was the Blues here, and some of the first blues every recorded was done here. Blues greats such as Son House, Charley Patton, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson all came from the Delta. Delta Blues is the foundation that many other styles were derived.

Blues Style - Bentonia Blues
Unique to Mississippi (Bentonia)

Bentonia Blues is often synonymous with blues legend Nehemiah "Skip" James, from Bentonia, Mississippi. Skip James was an enigmatic and powerful bluesman who played guitar most of his life. The sound of the Bentonia school of the blues can be described as distinctly 'eerie' because of the unique tuning used (Open E Minor). Today, several notable bluesmen still play in the Bentonia style, most notably is Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, who has recorded several albums and owns the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia, a world famous Mississippi Delta juke joint.

Mississippi Blues Clubs

Ground Zero Blues Club
364 Delta Ave
Clarksdale, Mississippi 38614
(662) 621-9009
groundzerogm@cableone.net
Matt's Notes: Ground Zero is the quintessential, 100%, Blues-on-tap authentic Blues Club. It gets no deeper blue than this!

Po' Monkeys
Poor Monkey Road (Lefthand side)
Merigold, Mississippi
Matt's Notes: It may belong under landmarks! The last Juke Joint in the world, Run by Po' Monkey himself. He's lived in the small sharecropper shack since 16, and it's been around long before that. It's only open (and packed) Thursdays. It's filled with character; money, pictures, and monkeys are stapled across the ceiling. And from personal experience, the suit switching, (he has 300+ suits and changes... a lot), playfully wig wearing, side-splitting funny Monkey is one of the best guys you'll meet. It's worth waiting for a Thursday no matter what.

The Shed BBQ and Blues Joint
7501 Hwy 57
Ocean Springs, Mississippi 39565
228-875-8577
Matt's Notes: The Shed is a beautiful blues & BBQ joint. For most any blues fan, it's everything you'd expect. Here @ Bluescentric we value our smoked, BBQed and cooked meats with a passion, and we can safely say that The Shed's BBQ is 100% top notch. These guys do their bar-b-que and their blues with determination. Watch their big outdoor stage for live blues on the weekends, great food & one heck of a unique atmosphere and vibe all year round.

Club Ebony
404 Hannah Street
Indianola, Mississippi 38751
662-887-2264
Matt's Notes: Club Ebony is one of the last of the great Mississippi clubs. Genius artists such as Ray Charles, Ike Turner, Count Bassie, James Brown, and B.B. King himself have played at Ebony, which is interestingly B.B. King's hometown. Ebony still packs miles of musical talent and still serves up excellent food and cool drinks. Miss Mary Shepherd had owned the club for decades before selling to none other than B.B. King, who wanted to continue enriching music history. On lucky days, one might find the former owner at the B.B. King Museum, where her and the rest of the staff are always willing to share a story, a friendly smile, and hospitality.

Mississippi Blues Landmarks, Museums and Places of Interest

662-887-9539
Matt's Notes:
The hours are from 10:00 to 6:00, Monday through Saturday, and admission is $10 per person with special discounts for groups, students, etc.
This newly opened museum is, hands down, one of most excellent museums around. The exhibits and interactive material are exquisite. It is very well worth a trek to visit.

Delta Blues Museum
1 Blues Alley
PO Box 459
Clarksdale, Mississippi 38614
662-627-6820
Matt's Notes:
The hours are from 9:00 to 5:00, Monday - Saturday. It costs $7 per person and group rates are available!
The museum contains excellent biographic information, blues memorabilia, and pieces of history for many of the most famous Delta Bluesmen. Currently, they've got Muddy Water's fully restored original cabin and rich displays of Mud's life & achievements. (An entire Muddy Waters wing is planned for the future; donations needed!) A trip to the museum is highly recommended and well worth the trip!
