Mamie Smith
(May, 1883 – September 16, 1946)
Mamie was one of the Pioneers in Blues music, being among the first to record Blues as we know it. Her most well known hit was "Crazy Blues" which reportedly sold over one million copies, something was absolutely, positively unheard of in that time. However, this showed record companies that there was an entire genre of musicians they'd largely ignored: African Americans. Her sales and popularity opened the floodgates to the emerging recording of many more black musicians, particularly Blues musicians, who very well might not have otherwise had a chance to record. Mamie's musical preferences lay more towards Vaudeville than traditional Blues. She was a prolific entertainer, acting in plays, appearing in several early movies as well, and taking part in circus-like entertainment venues. She recorded on and off for the majority of her life and enjoyed a very successful entertainment career, as well as played a pivotal role in building race relations and opening doors for African Americans that were previously unreachable. Best of all, she did it all through music. And not just any music; Blues music. Nearly any classic female Blues musician owes Mamie a debt of gratitude, since so many that came after her borrowed from Mamie's extensive repitoire.
