Big Brother and the Holding Company had gained international attention after an explosive Monterey Pop Festival performance, and the band's 1968's Cheap Thrills album hit #1 on the charts for eight nonconsecutive weeks.

The album's intricate artwork was fittingly made by counterculture icon R. Crumb. The album was filled with compelling hits like a Summertime cover and Piece of My Heart, but Ball and Chain was the era's breakaway hit.
